Hotels
Albion Waste partnered with a London hotel to improve its waste management by introducing separate collections for glass waste. This initiative drastically increased the hotel's recycling rates, reduced its carbon footprint, and lowered waste collection costs.
Albion Waste also provided tailored educational materials for hotel staff, emphasising the significance of proper waste separation, which resulted in higher staff engagement and a more sustainable waste management system for the hotel

Initial challenges
Apart from the common challenges of introducing recycling practices to an established business, like staff training, space constraints and initial costs. There were more specific challenges that we needed to account for:
-
Guest participation: Encouraging hotel guests to participate in recycling efforts can be challenging, particularly with varying levels of awareness and habits among guests from different regions or countries.
-
Operational consistency: Ensuring recycling practices are maintained consistently across different areas of the hotel, from guest rooms to kitchens, dining areas, and event spaces, requires ongoing oversight and effort.

Benefits to the customer and the environment
The benefits of implementing the new system were visible within six months of service.
-
Environmental Benefits: Reduces landfill use, lowers emissions, conserves natural resources, and cuts energy consumption.
-
Financial Savings: Lowers waste disposal costs, especially for heavy materials like glass, and can generate revenue from recyclables.
-
Reputation & Engagement: Enhances brand reputation and improves staff engagement by promoting sustainability and responsible practices.

Clear results
After six months of implementation, we were able to produce service reports based on the weight data collected from the site. 60% decrease in tonnes of "general waste" produced.
Highlighted reductions in general waste costs due to glass recycling and the potential for additional savings through waste segregation (e.g., food waste collection being cheaper than general waste).

Long term objectives
Long term project with this customer is to:
-
Install a glass crusher to support large volumes of glass produced. This will allow us to reduce service frequency, therefore improving the carbon footprint.
-
Increase recycling rates by implementing separate food waste collection. This will prepare the customer for 2025 regulations change.
